Small Measures - Big Impactt!

µ-GPS Optics GmbH is developing a technology for extremely precise 3D optical measurements, which is used for industrial application.

The measurement system functions similarly to Global Positioning System, most commonly known as GPS, which is used in most navigation systems. To determine a position, instead of using radio signals that are sent from several satellites (system GPS uses), the product designed by µ-GPS GmbH uses light rays reflected from different locations (triangulation). Through this means, an extremely precise measurement in the 1-5 µm (1-5 millionths of a meter) is achieved. Other advantages of the system include, but are not limited to: the flexibility of the system, the automatable function, the lower time requirement compared to current measurement methods, and the reduced costs.

The future applications of this technology are extremely diverse and multifaceted. Though, the technology is typically used during the set up of precision engineering machines that require exact and accurate spatial positions.

At the Hannover Messe (Trade Fair) 2011, µ-GPS Optics GmbH exhibited a fully functioning prototype of their device and was able to attract the keen interest of potential customers.
