Detect and localize pipeline leaks

PiMON GmbH is developing a fiber optic based monitoring and localization technology for pipeline leak detection.

Pipeline networks are an effective and important means of transport for liquid and gaseous substances, ranging from oil and gas to water to chemicals. Periodically however, leaks in the pipeline occur, which often lead to the loss of the valuable goods transported, as well as environmental damage. Leaks are caused by accidents during construction work, fatigue, and or sabotage. When leaks occur, it is imperative that their location is precisely and quickly located so that appropriate and effective countermeasures can be initiated.

PiMON GmbH has taken on the task of developing a monitoring solution that meets these pipeline detection demands. The use of fiber optic technology is relatively inexpensive to install and can operate largely automated, and is therefore cost-saving. Another advantage of this technology is that it will be able to monitor elongated structures such as rail tracks, bridges and tunnels.
